New Music Tuesday 14 - Toy

Posted by Alex Bohea on December 04, 2013

A weekly feature here at The Great Divide Blog is our New Music Tuesday; introducing you to an artist or band you may not have heard of. We can’t guarantee that you won’t have heard of them, but if that’s the case, it might give you a little reminder to revisit them sometime soon.

Toy are one of those great bands you end up stumbling upon at a festival. At Bestival 2012, after having enough a face-melting techno and flimsy indie bands, I joined a friend who loved this band. It was one of those nice surprises, not knowing what to expect, and finding a band that you absolutely love. The sullen, atmospheric lighting and five guys dressed in leathers, floral prints and turtle necks was the perfect introduction to the band that blends styles of psychedelic rock, krautrock and post-punk together in a moody mash. Inspired by early electronic music and their friends band, The Horrors, the bands self-titled debut album came out to critical acclaim. Now, with a new album just about to be released entitled ‘Join the Dots’, Toy are back with their early 90’s sulky Pulp-esque sounds.
