Neil Young’s iconic 1974 record "On The Beach" was a melancholy, intensely introspective triumph. The recording sessions for the album were chaotic and Young’s co-producers sometimes struggled to keep control of the drug-fuelled, alcohol-drenched days spent recording at Sunset Sound in Hollywood. These sessions were reportedly frequented his friends the Grateful Dead who introduced Young to a cocktail of sautéed marijuana and honey which he called a “honey slide”.
The record's themes focused on drug abuse, a fractured society, the disgraced US President Richard Nixon, the blood-sucking exploits of the oil industry and Youngs past encounters with with the psychotic cult leader Charles Manson.
