Inside RRL: Ralph Lauren's Authentic Americana Collection Explained

Inside RRL: Ralph Lauren's Authentic Americana Collection Explained

To understand RRL, you first have to understand Ralph Lauren.

Ralph Lauren started out collecting vintage Americana, in the form of well-worn denim, military jackets, ranch clothing, and workwear that carried the marks of decades of use. Every faded canvas jacket, every frayed denim shirt, every tarnished brass button held a history.

In 1993, that lifelong appreciation became Double RL, named after his 17,000-acre Colorado ranch. More than another label, RRL was a deeply personal venture created to preserve the character of these garments and the disappearing traditions behind them.Inspired by vintage workwear, military uniforms, and the American West, RRL wasn't built to reinterpret history, instead,  built to honour it. Less about retail and more about creating an authentic archive, every collection reflects Ralph Lauren's belief that the very best clothing deserves to be understood with every detail preserved and appreciated.

Now let’s get into it:

First in our lineup is the classic Henley: Ralph Lauren originally introduced the henley to mainstream fashion in 1976. Today, it remains a core piece in RRL's vintage-inspired Americana and workwear collections. We’ve hand-picked these Garment Dye Waffle pieces in Spring Beige and Tree Green alongside a truly special Jacquard version in Washed Blue Indigo. Next we turn to the big dogs, RRL Denim: RRL weaves and dyes their yarn in Japan and the U.S. using natural indigo and rope-dyeing techniques. This means the fabric will fade beautifully over time. Each piece is meticulously thought out and created.

A highlight for us is the Slim Boot Selvedge Jean: Crafted from 16oz Tennessee-grown cotton denim, these jeans are ring-spun and rope-dyed with true indigo in Japan before being individually distressed and washed for an authentic, lived-in finish. Inspired by 1930s Western workwear, they're made in the USA with traditional details including selvedge construction, a chain-stitched waistband, button fly, and a debossed leather patch, finished in a slim boot-cut fit.

Sitting elegantly beside the Corduroy Collar Denim jacket: Cut from 11oz Japanese indigo-dyed denim, this jacket is lightly washed and distressed to achieve a soft, lived-in character without sacrificing durability. Inspired by 1940s workwear, it features a fine-wale corduroy collar, vintage metal hardware, four rounded utility pockets, and a classic regular fit, combining authentic heritage detailing with everyday versatility.

Right, let’s talk shirting: Double RL shirting is special because it perfectly recreates vintage American workwear, military uniforms, and western styles. Carefully adhering to historically accurate details, rare fabrics, and premium construction. Each shirt is designed to age beautifully and tell a unique story. We struggle to pick a favourite here so you’ll have to decide. Shop all RRL Shirting here.Last but certainly not least we have Ralph’s accessories.  Like the clothing, many RRL caps are released in relatively small quantities and are rarely restocked. Popular styles often become sought after on the resale market, particularly those made from unique fabrics or featuring seasonal artwork. Discover our RRL accessory collection here.

One of things we cherish most about RRL is that they don't identify as a brand for everyone, and they have never tried to be.

In a market increasingly driven purely by consumption, RRL asks for something different. It asks you to appreciate why a garment was made, where its fabric came from, how it was constructed, and what inspired it in the first place. For those simply looking for a jacket, the price can seem difficult to justify. For those who understand the craftsmanship behind it, it begins to make perfect sense.

It's expensive, but for genuine reason: The cost reflects more than a label. It reflects custom-woven Japanese selvedge denim, heavyweight American textiles, traditional manufacturing techniques, specialist mills, vintage construction methods, and the countless hours spent refining every detail. Admiring the finer details, from the weight of the canvas to the choice of hardware, every element exists for a reason.

That's what makes RRL so compelling. It can sit behind your classic high-end brands, whilst remaining completely incomparable in appeal, because its value isn't measured in logos or seasonal relevance. It's measured in authenticity, craftsmanship, and longevity.

For many, that level of attention is unnecessary. For others, it's exactly the point. Those are the people RRL has always been made for. In a world where so much is designed to be replaced, RRL creates pieces intended to be worn, repaired, passed on, and appreciated for years to come.

That kind of value is difficult to quantify, which is precisely why, for the people who connect with RRL, it's considered priceless.
